A connection between parent and child can begin before birth. When a pregnancy ends through miscarriage or abortion, that connection may remain deeply significant. Within our Taoist faith, we recognise a spiritual dimension to this connection, and we offer rites for those who wish to seek help through our tradition.

Our faith and experience

At ZDHT, our work is grounded in Taoist faith and more than ten years of practical experience. Through our own practice and the experiences shared by clients, we take spiritual disturbances seriously. We believe that some concerns call for spiritual attention alongside the practical support a person may need.

Our conviction is that Taoist rites have a meaningful role in addressing spiritual concerns. We perform them with sincerity, care and dedication, seeking to resolve disturbances, dedicate merit to the departed and support greater peace in the lives of those who come to us. We cannot promise a particular outcome, but we will fulfil our role as Taoist masters to the best of our ability.

Understanding Foetus Spirit 婴灵

In our religious practice, the term “foetus spirit” (婴灵) refers to the spirit of a child whose life ended through miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth or death shortly after birth. We believe that these connections deserve care and that unresolved spiritual ties may be an important concern for some families. Our response is compassionate guidance and appropriate rites, rather than blame or hostility toward the departed.

Experiencing pregnancy loss does not automatically mean a person is spiritually disturbed. We do not judge anyone’s circumstances or assume that every difficulty has the same explanation. An enquiry begins with listening to the person and understanding the religious help they are seeking.

Why people seek our help

Some clients approach us during periods of repeated setbacks, strained relationships or a persistent sense that something remains unsettled. They may feel that their experiences have a spiritual dimension and wish to discuss a previous pregnancy loss within that context. We take those concerns seriously and explain our understanding through Taoist belief and practice.

Our experience informs the religious guidance we offer; it is not a diagnosis of a medical condition or proof of the cause of a financial or family difficulty. Where medical or counselling support is needed, it can continue alongside spiritual care.

What the ritual seeks to accomplish

Taoist rites for foetus spirits (婴灵超荐) involve prayer, scripture recitation, offerings and dedication of merit. Within our tradition, we invoke the Taoist deities for their guidance and blessings, and pray that the departed may be guided toward peace and release from suffering. Where spiritual connections are a concern, the rites seek reconciliation and resolution, with the intention of helping the family move forward with greater peace.

The parents’ participation may include expressing care, acknowledging their own feelings and making a sincere dedication of merit. This is not a requirement to live in guilt. We approach the departed with compassion and the living with respect.

Preparation and the ceremony

For ritual preparation and selection of the date and time, we may ask for the mother’s birth details and, where available, the father’s birth details. We explain what information is needed before booking. Personal details should be shared privately, not in public comments.

We usually conduct the ritual at our temple, following the appropriate Taoist observances. Arrangements may include ritual invocation, prayers for guidance, scripture recitation and offerings to the Taoist deities. We discuss the scope, preparation, attendance and fees before proceeding.

Observances after the ritual

For this ritual, guidance may include three days of vegetarian observance, three days of abstaining from sexual activity, and fourteen days of the prescribed recitation with dedication of merit. We explain which observances apply to the agreed ceremony and how to follow them, taking individual circumstances into account.

Our commitment to you

We offer religious services with conviction in our tradition and a commitment to perform our role conscientiously. We do not guarantee changes to health, finances or relationships, and our services do not replace medical treatment. Choosing a ceremony remains a personal decision, made according to your beliefs, wishes and means.

Both parents are welcome to enquire, including about an experience from many years ago. You do not need to share more than you are comfortable discussing during an initial enquiry.
